Closure of Vienna’s main S-Bahn line and how to get to Vienna Airport

From today until the end of October 2027, ÖBB will modernise Vienna’s main S-Bahn line. The central section between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof will be closed – including the route via Wien Mitte/Landstraße and Wien Rennweg used by both the S7 airport train and the City Airport Train. For 14 months, neither the S7 nor the CAT will therefore operate to Vienna Airport via their usual route. Travel to and from the airport will change during this period – this overview shows which connections will continue to operate and which option is the fastest for you.

Does the CAT operate normally during the closure? 

Yes – the City Airport Train will continue to operate, but not as a train. During the line closure, the CAT will run a replacement bus service (“CAT by bus”): premium coaches will continue to take you directly from Wien Mitte to Vienna Airport and from the airport into the city centre, even more frequently than before – with up to five departures per hour.

Which connections will operate to Vienna Airport during the closure?

Even during the S-Bahn closure, alternatives are available for transfers between Vienna Airport and Vienna city centre.
  • CAT – premium coaches direct from Wien Mitte/Landstraße to the airport every 12 minutes. The right choice if you need a direct connection to Vienna city centre.
  • REX, Railjet, RJX and IC – these long-distance trains connect Wien Hauptbahnhof with Vienna Airport around twice per hour.
  •  S7 (shortened route) – during the closure, the S7 will only run from the airport as far as St. Marx. From there, you need to change to tram lines 18 or 71 to continue towards the city centre.
